M-Corp delivered their Continuity CMS as the foundation technology to enable a tactical Intranet to be developed and deployed to all employees of the RNLI. This included all HQ staff as well as access in the 237 lifeboat stations around the coast of the UK.

The intranet, named ‘Porthole’ delivered the following key functionality on time and to budget:

  • News – corporate, departmental, location and external
  • Calendar/diary – corporate and location
  • Discussion Forums – collaboration across all departments and locations
  • Notice boards – location and department
  • Polls/Surveys – homepage quick poll
  • Document library – the single source for up-to-date corporate documents, including forms, policies, procedures, HR documents, training and much more.
  • Advanced search – detailed search options to filter and narrow search results
  • Personalisation – news, notice boards, favourite links and messages tailored to the user based on their profile.
  • Departmental and location pages
  • Station directory – comprehensive list of all lifeboats stations, key contact information, skills, size, number and type of lifeboats.
  • People directory – integration with Novell LDAP directory and eGuide to deliver online directory of employees.

Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI)

The RNLI is a registered charity that saves lives at sea. It provides, on call, the 24-hour service necessary to cover search and rescue requirements to 50 miles out from the coast of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, from 237 stations, and a beach lifeguards service on 43 beaches in the south west of England. The RNLI depends entirely on voluntary contributions and legacies for its income.
