A good taxonomy should be simple, easy to remember, and easy to use. In Web portal design, taxonomies are created to describe categories and subcategories of topics found on the Web site. In simple terms, it is a classification hierarchy of your content. It is often used to define the site information architecture and navigation.
Designing a corporate taxonomy is not a small task, and should not be under estimated. It is not something that can be defined just by analysing existing web pages and documents, but requires detailed analysis of how different users associate certain information with a variety of hierarchical classifications and locations.
The design of the site taxonomy should reflect this analysis, resulting in the same information being accessed from different locations and navigation routes. This is an ongoing task, and requires input from every area of the business if the final implementation is to function correctly.
The taxonomy helps to inform the Meta data associated at each category and sub-category level.
